Toku Review: Protect Tokyo Enetower and Vs Gokaiger

Time for another round of the 30 minute movie plus teamup with previous film, now while some of these films may have some issues standing out, in the case of this film, it's also an advertisement for just how awesome Tokyo Tower is. Like look at that piece of architectural achievement isn't it so cool and how they take the time to save it and let's just get this review going before I realize I have a building fetish.

Enter plans to take the newly outfitted Tokyo Enetower, as the busters combat him and his new roid, they find that the buddyroids have rusted over and can't do much. Without their allies to get them close, the quartet must come up with a way to stop the area and the people in being warped into hyperspace.

What follows is standard summer sentai film affair, bigger threat, some kind of new zord the heroes make use of and for some odd reason the continuation of Yoko getting shafted when it comes to zords. Often times the summer films just come off as slightly better looking version of a filler episode of the show and in the case of Tokyo Enetower that definetly feels it, while the zord fight at the end is a highlight of the action that is capable of this show, it is very much a warm up for a film rather than a movie, and like most warm ups it's perfectly okay if underwhelming as we move to the main focus.

VS. GOKAIGER

The Gokaigers are back on earth and allied with the Zangyack (I feel like we have been here before.) Now working for Bacchus Gills who has allied himself with Enter, they are in search of the phantom ranger keys which hold the power to let you do whatever they want. As the group clashes with the Go-busters and Gai shows up just as confused as us. Enter grabs the red phantom key which opens up a portal that transports all but Hiromu, Ryuji, Nick and... Usada for some reason, they soon discover thanks to a cameo that the portal actually sent the group through time as they commence a rescue mission to get their friends back and keep the phantom keys out of the evil alliances hand.

So let's get the obvious thing out of the way, the reuse of evil gokaigers following superhero taisen falls completely flat as a shocker, though it is different in that all but Gai and Navi. Though unlike that film it gets that whole twist out of the way rather quickly and that is the best way to describe this Vs movie, it's really fast after the opening and establishing what needs to be done our heroes are rushing out across time to complete their objectives and that can also be an issue as a story on it's own, for example when they are trying to figure out where Yoko and Beet are, Kaoru Shiba just shows up to let them know they are back in Edo (Because Toei just loves it's edo era set and will use it when applicable.) Just to keep the plot at pace rather than a natural thing, though since this is a gokaiger crossover, cameo and returning anniversary stuff is something to expect.

Yep, they are totally evil now, also what can you do with a drunken leader, seriously I don't know what they plan to do with him.

Another unfortunate thing carried over from Gokaigers were the villains, as Enter takes a backseat to a returning Zangyack with Bacchus Gill taking center stage, he's an angry alcaholic who wants to destroy earth and that's really all their is to him, if it weren't for the Gill last name he would just be your standard monster of week, and his subordinate is even more forgettable in how he just exists.

Now that we have gotten the obvious negative things out of the way now is time to talk about the good stuff because their is a lot of good going on, the obvious one is the return of the gokaigers who are still as good as they were in the main show, acting cocky but clearly caring for the world now in trusting it to the next era of heroes, but the real stars are the buddyroids who's late film sacrifice to get everyone back to the present leaves them without their personalities or memories of their time with their respective comrade. And the way that each comrade mourns what is essentially their death and their last desperate fight against Enter in a megazord is not only proof of the acting chops for these three but also cements them as more than just the robots to pilot the zords. The Kyoryuger's sneak preview may just be one of the funniest moments I have seen in toku, as Kyoryu red is just standing their claiming that they are a team ready to help fight, only for the confused Hiromu and Marvelous to deflate him when they make him realize he's alone. While in retrospect it would be harsher considering how red-centric Kyoryuger would be (Can't say for myself until I see it.) But it does a good way of setting up the next team, in that they are not a true team to start with while preparing everyone for the much lighter tone of the next season.

And that final mech battle it is, it is, I'll just show you the image below

Dinosaurs... WITH GUNNNNNNNNS... and samba

Oh yeah, it's complete fan service that takes away, but hey, just seeing a lot of older mecha doing some of the fancier stuff modern series would do is a treat for the eye, mecha fight in these crossovers are often nothing to write home about but this is one is one to remember. (P.S, I am not the only one who finds it ironic that not counting CB-01, the other mecha for each is zyuranger, Gaoranger, Magiranger and Boukenger, the 4 sentai that would be represented in Zenkaiger alongside the original series.)

Kikai Sentai Zenkaig... oh wait 9 years too early

CONCLUSION

Vs. Gokaiger is not without flaws, the plot is barebones and doesn't build on either series, the villains don't make use of their best asset, and it recycles a shock trailer catch from the previous crossover movie. But it is with it's highpoints of memorable emotional and funny moments that puts it on the good side of these crossover, it's no 199 or goseiger vs shinkenger but it is an enjoyable time.

FINAL GRADE: B-
