Toku-Mini Review: Ultraman Mebius Gaiden

You know there is something spectacular about the older generation of tokusatsu, mostly because in terms of additional media, you probably at the minimum have one or two movies, its not like today where you get movie plus potentially numerous spin-offs alongside the show. Obviously the prevalence of more accessible internet and the expanded fandom makes these possible. But of course there were the early outliers. The big one was Den-o that just kept releasing content years after the show had ended and to a lesser extent Mebius. The Mebius Gaiden was a set of three mini-series (We are only talking about two because the last one, Ghost rebirth ties into the series that came out after, Mega monster battle and will probably be discussed whenever we get to the second season of that show.) But in regards to the first two, we had one focused on Hikari showing what he was up to after certain points in the story, and armored darkness serving as an epilogue to the season. Not an insane amount and they are quite short, but you know hey, after den-o and even Revice, I am happy to not see too much stuff to talk about.

HIKARI

Hikari, a ultra focused more on research finds himself interested in the planet Arb, a planet full of Crystal-like aliens who have only known peace but soon find that peace potentially disrupted, only the legend of Tsurugi may be able to save them from a monster known as Bogarl. thus setting the ultra down a path of hatred to be reborn into another warrior protecting peace.

Hikari is more of a fill in what Hikari was up to at certain points in the story, what happened before season, once he leaves after beating Bogarl and when he is returning to the planet after his training. With the later two episodes kind of leading into the episode it takes place before. It clearly is a reinforcement of the character development he got from earlier in the season. With a sort of bookend, dawning the armor first for vengeance but now gaining it to fight for justice. Seeing the additional Ultra's is nice and King and Zoffy helping him. Calling it Saga I do think is a bit too much, its more a story, as it serves as a good companion piece to watch in the middle of Mebius when you start, and at the start of the second part and midway through, it is a really nice additional expansion on the universe.

ARMORED DARKNESS

After the defeat of Alien Empera, the new GUYS led by Ryu deals with some revived monster when Empera's ship the darknesphere descends onto earth, going in he and a subordinate, Haruzaki find something similar to when Empera invaded earth, but the duo is attacked by an armor of darkness as the former member of guys reunite to rescue there friend as Mebius also comes in to investigate.

There is a bit more in regards to Darkness, as it is basically an epilogue episode, it gets right to the point of reuniting the team alongside the new kid on the block as they fight the remnants of Empera's invasion. While coming out almost a year after the series finale, its like the cast hasn't missed a beat, I do wish we got a little more of them together, the human members bar Ryu get a little time but it could be more, maybe an additional part for like a reunion with Mirai coming back. Especially since the 2nd part is fully dedicated to the final fight. It still is worth a watch for the action and seeing this cast again, even if it is more an action epilogue than one for the cast.
