It all started here, a tradition as old as... almost me, just 3 years off, as if a thing that happens every year, like the sun setting and rising, water being wet, Kamen Rider would begin to relese summer movies for all their seasons following Kuuga. Not really much to ay outside of talking about the original heisei summer movie.
A military facility dedicated to psychic children is attacked by ant lords, in the chaos of the attack, a young girl escapes and runs into Shouichi who proceeds to give her shelter. Meanwhile a new rider is on the scene, G4, a system that Ozawa had been working on as another upgrade to G3-X, but dropped due to how dangerous the system was. But was stolen by Risa Fukami who finished it, hoping to make G4 the best weapon of man kind, she intends to use psychics in order to allow G4 to predict the future, which gets Mana dragged into it as the trio have to deal with not only G4 but eh ant lords causing havoc.
As the first movie for Heisei (Not counting the 90's movies, since the difference between Heisei and Showa is Shotaro Ishinomori's involvement.) Project G4... is an episode of Agito. I know as a first outing their testing things. But if it were not for the whole G4 project and the better production values. It is like a longer episode of the season. And honestly, it isn't even one of the better epsidoes of Agito. The new ant lords are just... there, and G4... what about him, a former soldier who chooses to embrace death to be the ultimate soldier, putting him at odds with Makoto as they have the main fight while Agito and Gils face off against the lords. Even out of his show, Agito still doesn't have the focus of facing the main foe. Though I like how they do differ in their willingness to kill humans not targeted by the overlord. Also drowning is my least favorite way a person could go so maybe I am also terrified.
Risa is mostly just a hate sink, the worst kind of military official who is too dumb to live as the world as she steals the work of others. Since the ant lord are not really character's and G4 is her creation. She is meant to earn the ire which I give credit, she earns the ire and the death that is... shockingly. Like the film sets up the ant lords of causing people to drown from some liquid, only to have Risa get eaten when she is surrounded, like its not shown but that is shocking for a children's show, almost out of a zombie show.
But besides that, the film also doesn't really look much different from the show, yeah we have new locations but the production just feels slightly more beefed up, with some actually decent lighting. The big draw was seeing the new forms for Agito and Gills which had not premiered in show as of the time of airing. Which is cool... but thats kind of it.
Project G4 is... there, its not the worst but as the first movie, it really doesn't offer much it just kind of happens. One of the more forgettable summer movies and almost immediately overshadowed by next years film. It reminds me of some of the more uninteresting sentai summer movies and not in a good way.
