So this is going to be a bit different, you may notice that I am not talking about one thing but two, this is mostly because one the movie is not really a movie and more a 30 minute special that aired before the Kamen rider movie that year (and that is a majority of sentai movies that are not a Vs ) and there was only really one other special that I needed to talk about that was not very long and I just decided that I would talk about both of these together.
While on his morning Jog, Gai finds that the sky darkens and a mysterious ship appears out of them, after getting into GoZyuRex, the ship transforms into an evil Gokaioh that defeats him and tells him to send the others his way. The other gokaigers recognize the ship as a cosmic ghost ship that sails the universe for dead souls. But also houses the God eye, a treasure capable of granting any wish to those who hold. Seeing a shortcut to the greatest treasure in the universe within reach. The gokaigers minus Gai set off to find the ship and claim the god eye, but what traps await the gokaigers aboard the ship and why were they called there.
So right off the bat I will give credit to the design and look of the ship, it does look really good, it looks all old and abandoned and mixes well a classic ship with some more futuristic designs and the film original villain los dark (who has probably one of the lamest names ever since it the dark because los is the in english, though it might not be the spanish word los and I am just thinking to hard on this form some reason) has this cool looking grim reaperish look to him. Outside of that, eh. While there is some good spectacle ranging from the fight against all of the previous henchman save the current one's and remake of a classic Gorenger battle against Baseball mask. The whole film screams filler.
The plot, what little there already was takes a back seat after the Gokaigers, minus Gai because...because, and they fight a bunch of mooks, have a baseball fight with a very old enemy, an then the main villain from Dekaranger just shows up because...because. Its the kind of fanservice that feels more hollow in that its "hey, its that thing, you remember that thing, yeah it was pretty cool." Okay so why is it here..."Because its that thing". And if it sounds like I am nitpicking its because there is so little here, the Zangyack show up early in the film because Warz Gillz wants to get to the god eye to quickly conquer the earth but that is almost immediately dropped as after they fail once we never see them again. There is this trio of stupid ghost who haunt the ship to deter people stealing the god's eye, who are they, did Los dark conjure them up, were they originally his crew on the ship? Going off of that what about Los Dark, we learn that he is luring in greedy people in order to bring himself back to life by stealing people's life force and afterwards intends to use the god eye to conquer the universe but we learn almost nothing about him, his just kind of there. That is probably the best way to describe this its just there, nothing is too awful but at the same time nothing particularly stands out, except maybe for the end of the baseball match where an idol group made up of actress from go-onger who exist both in and out of the show, appear from the last ball and defeat, it probably was one of very few reactions the film gave me. Even the climax where the rest of the crew tells marvelous to go and return to the real world to claim the god's eye and by extent the greatest treasure in the universe doesn't amount to much because you know he's going to use that wish to bring them back to this world, its not like the series prior has show that Marvelous does deeply care about his team and the fact that there is still half a series after this should tell you that nothing major ends up happening.
That feeling of it being just there also applies to the special Let's Do This Goldenly! Roughly! 36 Round Gokai Change!! Taking place after Warz Gillz and Barizorg's demise. Insarn has a new model called Karizorg who she intends to fuse with Gai to aquire his knowledge of Super Sentai but Marvelous shows up to stop it only to end up fusing with Gai. I do like seeing Ryota Ozawa, Marvelous's actor, playing up the bigger ham, excitable personality of Gai's, though the vioce is Junya Ikeda's. The special doesn't have much meat, after tracking down Insarn and figuring out what needed to be done in order to defuse, the Marvelous Gai goes through all 34 previous red sentai rangers before Marvelous uses the gold key to use bad looking gold mode power up to take out the replica before eating the combined ice cream that Gai was wanting to bring to him before this special started.
CONCLUSION
Unless you are really wanting to fill out your toku or sentai card of having watched everything, the flying ghost ship and let's do this goldenly can be skipped, while not bad per se, they are primarily specctacle first and stories second, if you have a lazy afternoon and can't decide what to watch, maybe you could watch these considering their short length.
